Sand & Aggregates — questions
- How many square metres of paving does one bulk bag of sand bed?
- At a 30 mm screeded bed, a one-tonne bag of paving sand covers roughly 20 m². Add 10% for joints and edge losses on your first paving job.
- What's the difference between paving sand and brickies sand?
- Paving sand is a washed, sharp sand that compacts firm under pavers. Brickies sand has clay content so mortar sticks and spreads — swap them and you get soft paving or unworkable mortar.
- Is cracker dust or road base right under my path?
- Road base is the structural layer — compact 75–100 mm of it first. Cracker dust is the fine levelling layer on top. For light foot traffic on stable sand, cracker dust alone can do; anything driven on needs base.
