The five parts of every retic system
Every system, big or small, is the same five things: a water source (mains or bore), a controller, solenoid valves that open each zone, pipe to carry the water, and sprinklers or drip to deliver it. Understand those five and no retic problem is a mystery again.
- Controller — the timer/brain, mounted in the garage or on a wall
- Solenoid valves — one per zone, usually grouped in valve boxes
- Poly pipe — the buried arteries (19 mm on most Perth zones)
- Sprinklers — pop-ups for lawn, drip or micro-spray for beds
- Wiring — low-voltage cable from controller to each valve
Zones: why your garden waters in stages
Your water supply can only push so many sprinklers at once, so systems are split into zones (stations) — the lawn might be two zones, the beds a third on drip. Each zone is a solenoid valve, and the controller runs them one after another.
When one zone dies and the rest run fine, the fault is nearly always that zone's valve or its wire joint — which is why solenoids are the most-bought retic part in Perth.

Build the schedule around your roster, and remember drip systems have different allowances than sprinklers. Check the current rules for your suburb before setting the controller.

A typical single-zone repair (new valve, a couple of pop-ups, fittings) runs to a modest parts bill; a full small-yard system (controller, four zones, pipe, heads) is a weekend project and a car-boot of parts.
